WHAT IS A MASTER GARDENER?
Since 1972, the UConn Extension Master Gardener Program has been training environmentally and community minded volunteers throughout the state in horticulture and gardening best practices.
- The comprehensive 9 month program taught by Extension educators and specialists includes over 100 hours of horticulture instruction and 60 hours of supervised in-service training and community outreach.
- Master Gardener (MG) interns work with previously certified MG mentors in their local Extension office answering gardening questions and diagnosing plant problems.
- Fairfield County MGs contribute thousands of volunteer hours annually in office and also while participating in hands-on gardening, and environmental projects around our county.
- Project Examples:
- Restoring native habitats
- Creating pollinator pathway
- Educating groups on invasive plants and insects
- Cultivating vegetable gardens for local food pantries.
